Mount Hood gets a foot and a half of fresh snow in mid-March

A powerful winter storm has dropped a foot and a half of fresh snow onto Mount Hood over the past 24 hours, bringing snowpacks to just shy of average going into spring.

The temperature plummeted Sunday evening to turn sprinkles of rain into nice, fat snowflakes at all three major Mount Hood resorts. As of 4 pm March 17 Timberline had recorded 22 inches, Meadows 16 inches and Skibowl 11 inches.

The forecast is calling for more snow and cool temperatures on the mountain all week, so the snow should stick around for a while this time.

The 2013-14 season has seen major high-temperature melt-downs of precious snowpack and more than a few base-decimating rain storms, but believe it or not, this latest batch of snow brings snowpack levels to just shy of average, with several months of shredding still to be had and tons of Mount Hood events on the spring calendar.

Skibowl plans to operate through mid-April, and Meadows and Timberline will both stay open into May, with Timberline’s spring season lasting all the way to May 26.
