A perfect 3-D replica of Mount Hood – in a beer glass

The Oregon start-up that designed a pint glass with a detailed replica of Mount Hood inside has crushed its Kickstarter funding goals and picked up 1,000 new backers in just a few days.

The Oregon Pint is the creation of North Drinkware, a new company founded by three Portland entrepreneurs including Leigh Capozzi, the marketing director for Ski Oregon.

Capozzi, her husband Matt and their friend Nic Ramirez founded North Drinkware with the goal of connecting the burgeoning craft beer scene with the love of the outdoors shared by many beer drinkers.

“While the Oregon craft beer scene is unmatched, we often find ourselves drinking the local beer we love out of uninspiring glasses that have no connection to our lives,” Capozzi wrote in an e-mail to friends New Year’s Day. “So we decided to make something better.”

North Drinkware makes its hand-blown pint glasses in Portland, and their first product contains a meticulous three-dimensional rendering of Mount Hood molded into the base of the glass. They refined their design over 12 months, using data from USGS topographic maps to nail the details of the mountain at the center of the glass, and partnered with Portland-based Elements Glass to build the glasses.

They launched on Kickstarter Feb. 1, and the cash immediately started pouring in. They hit 200 percent of their funding goal within 28 hours, and as of 9:30 am Feb. 3, they had 1,000 backers and 630 percent of their funding goal, with 29 days still remaining in their Kickstarter campaign.

North Drinkware’s hypothesis about the strong connection between mountains and beer in Oregon is proving correct, and not just in Oregon, where over 180 brewing companies operate over 225 brewing facilities in 71 cities around the state. They are also planning to design glasses containing landmark images from Washington, Vermont, California and Colorado.
