July 15-17: Short-Track Mountain Bike Weekend at Cooper Spur

Cooper Spur Mountain Resort will host the first annual Short Track Weekend Mountain Bike event July 15 – 17 on the north side of Mt. Hood.

As the only OBRA short track event on the north side of Mt. Hood, the event is expected to attract competitors from the Gorge, Portland, Central Oregon and Washington State.

“It’s one of the only mountain bike events that is actually on a mountain, says race promoter Tom Scully. “The course is at the 3500 foot level with around a 60 foot vertical climb and drop each lap. It has some fun technical twisty turns and the Cooper Spur property is an awesome venue for hanging out and watching the action.”

The course will be about a mile in length and fairly technical, with a combination of single-track trails, grassy areas, technical turns and side hills, obstacles, climbs and fast and flat sections of dirt. Unlike last October’s Cross on the Mountain Cyclocross event at Cooper Spur, this course is designed to be rideable and shouldn’t force participants to dismount. The event is sanctioned by and registered through OBRA – Oregon Bicycle Racing Association.

OBRA also sanctions mountain bike races at Skibowl, which recently invested in a major upgrade in its mountain biking flow trails.

The Cooper Spur event kicks off Friday evening with a family fun race at 6 PM, to give families a chance to mountain bike together, get used to the course and prep for Saturday and Sunday’s featured events.

There will be 24 classes run in the event with advance registration through the OBRA website. Prices, directions and event registration information can be found here.

Portland-based bike venue The Lumberyard will present races and skills courses for kids 10 and under on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be cash pay-outs to Category A Men & Women with prizes in other categories, raffle prizes and free stuff from sponsors including Mountain View Cycles, The Lumberyard, 10 Speed Coffee, Dirty Fingers Bicycle Repair, 10 Barrel Brewing PDX, Crooked Tree Tavern, Cooper Spur Mountain Resort, Mt. Hood Meadows and OBRA.
