UPDATED, with race results: Masters, youth racers squeeze in a lively Turkey Slalom before the GS is cancelled due to puddles

Masters racers from across the Pacific Northwest and local junior racers shared a slalom race Saturday at Skibowl and managed to squeeze in some good, fast runs before torrential downpours swamped out the rest of Masters Mania Weekend on Mount Hood.

Skiyente Ski Club and Schnee Vogeli Ski Club hosted the Masters weekend and decided to open their slalom course Saturday to junior racers who have struggled to train and race at Skibowl all year due to poor conditions. The Jesse Scroggins-designed Turkey Slalom course ran down Dogleg and into the Lower Bowl and was well-received by racers of all ages.

The junior racers were 16 and under, and the Masters Racers ranged from 21-year-old former high school racer Christian Bennett to 77-year-old Rich Robertson. Here are two photos by Mike Juliana showing Bennett and Robertson on course:

Mount Hood-based Masters racers raked in the wins by age division.

  • Rich Roberton was first for men 75-79.
  • Alice Jacklet took first for women 70-74.
  • Jill Trulsen was first for women 60-64.
  • Beth Paraskeva was first for women 50-54.
  • Meg Spillman took first for women 45-49.
  • Melinda Kai took first for women 40-44.
  • Meegan Bombadil took first for women 30-34.
  • Amanda Moran took first for women 21-29.
  • Ladislav Konstacky took first for men 60-64.
  • Greg Dilger took second for men 60-64.
  • Jesse Scroggins took first for men 55-59 with the best combined time for all racers, 1:17:44.
  • Mike Smith took first for men 50-54.
  • Peter Dodd took first for men 45-49.
  • Brian Bogatin took first for men 40-44.
  • Jay Pollock took first for men 35-39.
  • Geoff Mihalko took first for men 30-34.

Junior racers got one run on red and one on blue, while Masters racers got four runs total, two on each side. For the juniors, U16 Nathan Gunesch of Mount Hood Academy raced to a resounding victory with a time four and a half seconds quicker than the next-fastest finisher.
