Mt. Hood Meadows Wins “Recycler of the Year”

Mt. Hood Meadows has added to its green credentials by being named “Recycler of the Year” in the business category by the Association of Oregon Recyclers.

Meadows received the award at the annual Sustainable Oregon Conference in Portland Friday, June 10. Organizers praised the company for becoming “a nation-wide leader in their industry for recycling efforts. They go above and beyond what standard recycling efforts may be. Due to their location they self-haul their materials to various locations throughout Oregon and they have been named one of the top 100 Best Green Businesses in Oregon for four consecutive years.”

In receiving the award Meadows Environmental Sustainability Manager and Master Recycler Heidi Logosz said the commitment to recycle comes from Meadows employees “living our core values including sustainability. It’s also about people and the relationships we foster with the local recycling organizations. Tri-County Hazardous Waste and Recycling Program, Waste Connections and Hood River Garbage, have been instrumental in helping to develop Meadows recycling program.”

Mt. Hood Meadows saves water with dual flush toilets and no-water urinals, saves electricity with new LEDs and efficiency initiatives, has cut its waste stream significantly through recycling and composting, and succeeded in shrinking its carbon footprint by a whopping 18 percent in its first year of measuring greenhouse gas emissions. The resort received a Golden Eagle environmental award last year for its efforts to reduce carbon emissions through the National Ski Areas Association’s climate challenge program.

David Skakal of Tri-County Hazardous Waste and Recycling nominated Meadows as “a company whose hard work, creative solutions or innovations have furthered recycling, waste prevention or reuse.”
