The Hillsboro REI store will host a safety workshop for backcountry skiers, snowshoers and other mountain explorers from 6:30 to 8 pm on Wednesday, December 3.

The class will cover the basics of why avalanches form, how to recognize avalanche danger and how to manage risk in the backcountry.

Up to 20 people can take this class for free, but spots are going quickly, so check REI’s website to register.

Previous avalanche courses at the Portland REI store filled up quickly.
