Gold medalists get the freestyle camps rolling, rain and/or shine

Olympic slopestyle champions Joss Christensen and Sage Kotsenburg got the freestyle camp sessions rolling this week for Windells and High Cascade on Mount Hood.

Christensen, Bobby Brown, Keri Herman and other slopestyle stars converged at Windells for a week of tricks hosted by Freeskier Magazine that got broken up by some nasty Oregon weather. Conditions got so brutal on Mount Hood that Timberline shut down operations completely on Friday the 13th, sending the skiers out in search of Bloody Marys and trampoline sessions – hopefully not in that order.

Week One Windells ski campers got to mix it up with Christensen, Keri Herman, and Karl Fostvedt , while the snowboard campers were hanging out with Nick Visconti, Erik Leon, and Scotty Vine.

Meanwhile, Sage Kotsenburg was tweeting about his impending arrival for Session One at High Cascade Snowboard Camp with his usual enthusiasm.

Sage got a raucous greeting from the Oregon weather gods, with thunder and lightning and zero visibility on the mountain. But you can’t keep that guy down for long. Sage and fellow Olympic medalists Kelly Clark and Gretchen Bleiler will be at High Cascade all week, kicking off a star-filled summer for more than 1,000 snowboard campers.

There’s plenty more star power on the way as the Mount Hood summer training season kicks into top gear: Ted Ligety, the Mahre Brothers, Danny Davis, Elena Hight, the list goes on. The summer season is scheduled to run through Labor Day, with a 108-inch snow base on the ground at 6,000 feet as of June 17.

Some 122 camps are registered at Timberline this summer, including eight U.S. teams. They range from high-level technical racing camps to laid-back training sessions for racers of all levels, to some of the sickest terrain park features you will find anywhere, especially in summer.
