160 top racers rip the ruts for Golden Rose 2014

Some 160 top junior racers from all over the Pacific Northwest competed in the 79th annual Golden Rose ski race May 24-25 at Timberline on Mount Hood.

Racers from Stevens Pass, Crystal Mountain, Mission Ridge, Sugar Bowl in Lake Tahoe, Mount Bachelor, Schweitzer, Sun Valley, Alpental, White Pass and Mt. Spokane traveled to Timberline for the latest sanctioned race of the 2013-14 season, racing against Mount Hood locals from Cascade Winter Sports Club, Mount Hood Academy, Meadows Race Team and Multnomah Athletic Club.

The racers ran slalom on Pucci both Saturday and Sunday, with course workers salting the course liberally and side-slipping frequently to keep the slushy ruts from building up too huge.

Reaching the podium for the men were Luke Winters of Sugar Bowl, Timothy Hill of Mount Bachelor, Colin Boit of, Keith McNabb of Crystal Mountain, Danny O’Neal of Mission Ridge and Lawrence Dickey of Crystal Mountain.

The race was hosted by Mount Hood Academy, and it is both the oldest continuously running annual race in the United States and the latest in the season sanctioned by the USSA. Former champions include Bill Johnson, the Mahre brothers, and the inventor of the modern ski binding, Hjalmar Hvam.
