Saturday, April 26 at Meadows: Sno-Kona Pond Skim

Meadows and Kona Brewing will host their eighth annual Sno-Kona Pond Skim contest Saturday with a $500 cash first prize and liquid refreshments flowing all day.

Anyone who wants to give the 100-foot pond a splash can register in advance for $30 here through 5 pm Thursday.

Participants who successfully skim the length of the pond during the first round qualifiers will advance to the finals, where they will be judged on their outfits (20 points), their style (20 points) and whether or not they successfully clear the water (10 points). In the event of a tie, the judges will confer and vote on who should be the winner.

In addition to the $500 first prize, prizes also will be awarded for second and third place overall, best costume, best splash, and “best impression made by a woman.”

Ski poles are not allowed in the competition, and participants may not be visibly intoxicated. Watching the event is free, and all participants get a complimentary Sno-Kona beach towel and celebratory Kona brew.

“The Sno-Kona Pond Skim is the most popular event at Meadows,” said Dave Tragethon, executive director of communications for Mt. Hood Meadows. “The skimming just gets better and better. The energy of the crowd and Liquid Aloha flowing all day is great fun and makes an excellent time on the mountain.”
