MAC club girls, Mt. Hood Race Team boys take first for the season in Mitey Mite racing

The overall team winners for Mitey Mite youth racing on Mount Hood in 2013-14 were the Multnomah Athletic Club girls team and the Mt. Hood Race Team boys.

The last race of the Mitey Mite season was canceled on Sunday due to poor visibility and wet snow, capping off a challenging season with kids racing in blizzards, sleet, howling winds and courses with barely enough snow to drill in gates.

Following the announcement that the race had been canceled, organizers presented trophies to the top overall racers as rated by cumulative times in the Under 14 and Under 12 age divisions. Here are the winners:

Girls under 12: Maddy Stern, Meadows Race Team

Girls under 14: Sami Woodring, MAC. Here’s a photo of Sami with runner-up Louise Howe after she won the 2014 Kids Kandahar in January:

Boys under 14: Luke Musgrave, Mt. Hood Race Team

Kids aged five to 13 compete in Mitey Mite races on Mount Hood representing five teams: Cooper Spur Race Team, MAC Ski Team, Mt. Hood Race Team, Meadows Race Team and Cascade Winter Sports Club.

All five teams have regular training on the weekends and sometimes on weeknights at well. They train and race roughly from Thanksgiving through April each season, and some clubs also offer summer training opportunities on Mount Hood.

Other than the MAC team, which is open to Multnomah Athletic Club families only, the teams are all open to new members. It’s not cheap, but there’s no better way to raise a child’s skiing level – and independence – than to get her skiing fast and having fun with friends.

Some top-notch racers have emerged from Mount Hood’s Mitey Mite racing system, including 2014 Olympian Jackie Wiles.
