Tucker FitzSimons and Hannah Bergemann led a talented team of Hood River Valley High School freeskiers to victory at this year’s state championships at Mt. Hood Meadows.

Hood River swept all of the team competitions and beat out a scrappy Sandy High squad for the overall trophy.

Bergemann, pictured below, took first in skier cross, rail jam, slopestyle and combined to cap off an outstanding season in her junior year.

There was no half pipe competition due to the weird weather year, and overall participation was fairly low, since most high schools across Oregon didn’t get much of a chance to train this year.

But the small group that did compete on Tuesday’s soggy slopestyle course down Fireweed showed a lot of style and enthusiasm as they shredded two jumps, a pipe rail, a wall feature, some boxes and a rainbow rail. Will Reuland of Lincoln High, pictured below, took third overall and is a strong favorite along with Bergemann to win THE 2014 Ski Meister award, which combines freestyle skiing and racing (slalom and GS races will be held Thursday and Friday this week).

As with all freestyle skiing competitions on Mount Hood this year, the state championships were supported by the USASA Mt. Hood Series and Windells Camps. Wally Inouye of Windells congratulated all the competitors on a fine 2014 and laid down a challenge for 2015:

“You other schools are going to have to get training and start recruiting so you can take down Hood River next year.”

That will not be easily accomplished.
