High School snowboarders prime up for a jam-packed schedule on Mount Hood

High School snowboarders will compete in 20 speed and style events on Mount Hood this coming season.

Riders will compete individually and in teams in banked slalom, snowboard cross, slopestyle, and halfpipe. Top competitors will qualify for the state championships in March at Mount Bachelor.

Four High School Snowboard Leagues train and compete on Mount Hood: Gorge, Metro, Sunset and Three Rivers. Those leagues contain most of the top high school teams in Oregon, including West Linn, Oregon City, Sandy, Summit and Lincoln.

Teams should start practicing up on the mountain in December, weather permitting, and competitions will get rolling in January. They will be doing halfpipe at Timberline as well as Meadows this year because Timberline management has committed to maintaining a halfpipe earlier in the season than usual in 2013-14. Events will be held at all three major resorts on Mount Hood.

Boarder cross races are held on the same courses as banked slalom races, with boarders grouped into brackets based on their times in the banked slalom. “Those races are really fun to watch,” says West Linn parent/rider Dean Phillips. “The fastest rider doesn’t always win. It’s one of those things where you just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

All the competitions are organized under the umbrella of the Oregon Interscholastic Snowboarding Association, which was founded in 1999.

Mount Hood teams dominated states last season. The West Linn boys and the Oregon City girls took the Sato Cup for overall excellence, with the Oregon City girls narrowly beating out Lincoln High by winning a tie-breaker snowboard cross race.

On the individual level:

Jeremy Nylund of Sandy High won states in slopestyle and took fourth in the banked slalom.

Sierra Clasen of Oregon City took second at states in slopestyle and fourth in banked slalom.

Emma Ronai-Durring of Lincoln took first in slopestyle and fourth in banked slalom.

Autumn Inouye of Summit took first in the halfpipe and eighth in the banked slalom

Adam Kays of West Linn took second in the banked slalom and fifth in slopestyle.

Virginia O’Regan of Sandy took third in the banked slalom and fourth in slopestyle.
