Mitey Mite and high school alpine racers squeezed in their first official runs of the season last weekend, with two league races at Mt. Hood Meadows and a lively season opener at Summit for Kids Kandahar 2015.
It has been another rough snow start for alpine racing on Mt. Hood this season, and adult PACRAT racers have not yet been able to stage a race. But organizers were able to pull off three races over the weekend up on Shooting Star at Meadows, which is at a higher elevation than the usual race locations at Skibowl and Stadium. And the Mt. Hood Race Team somehow was able to build a course for 250 kid racers on about five inches of snow at Kids Kandahar 2015.
It made for a busy weekend for racers, parents, coaches, volunteer gatekeepers and course-slippers, and photographers like Mike Juliana. Mike captured more than 5,000 racing images over the weekend, and they are available through his website here.

High School Racing
The Mt. Hood League raced slalom on Saturday at Meadows, and the Three Rivers League raced giant slalom on Sunday. They were the first official high school league competitions after the just-for-fun season warm-up of the Christine Cato Memorial held last weekend.
Perennial powerhouses Hood River Valley and West Linn led the way, with plenty of competition from Lincoln, Lake Oswego, St. Mary’s, Sandy and The Dalles, among others.
Cato winners Lucy McLean and Austin Keillor or Hood River won again in the Mt. Hood season opener, a short slalom course down Gemini with only 17 gates.
Natalie Waldrum led the Lincoln girls team to first in the Three Rivers race by winning the giant slalom in 37.02. The Lake Oswego girls took second and the West Linn team third, followed by Catlin Gabel, Central Catholic, La Salle, and Lakeridge.
The West Linn boys took first as usual, with strong competition from Lakeridge and individual winner Ashlay Ruddick, followed by Lake Oswego, Lincoln, Catlin Gabel, Central Catholic and Wilson.

Kids Kandahar 2015
The Kids Kandahar moved over from Multorpor at Skibowl to Summit due to snow conditions, giving hundreds of young racers and their families an opportunity to get to know Summit, a charming little place that doesn’t get a lot of use these days. Conditions were slow, the run was flat, the weather turned damp and chilly and snow coverage was minimal. But the kids had a blast tucking down in their race suits while their parents cheered them on from the side of the trail. It was definitely the most people I have seen at Summit in a long time, and it made for a fun, lively scene.
Parker Anderson of the MAC team snagged the fastest combined of the day, which is doubly impressive if you consider that he raced in the U12 division and beat all of the U14 competitors a year or two older than him.
Comeback of the day — make that year — definitely goes to Ella Tollefson of Cascade Winter Sports Club. Ella broke both of her legs while training on Mount Hood over the summer, but her sixth place finish for the U12 girls shows that she is rehabilitated and back in form.
I’ll post the full results below. But results don’t really matter so much at this age. What matters is that the kids have a great time while improving their skiing in the fresh air. Winterstart 2015
Also held over the weekend at Shooting Star was the Winterstart slalom, for advanced young regional racers trying to improve their FIS rankings and move up to the elite levels of alpine racing.
Turnout was pretty slim for Winterstart 2015, but the quality of the racing with high. Full results can be found on live-timing.com.
