High school racers have been making the most of a whacky weather year on Mount Hood.

It has been a challenge because of the limited snow at Skibowl, traditionally a huge workhouse for competitive racing in Oregon. Coaches and organizers have been working with resorts to switch to other venues and stage races at night, and as a result they have managed to cobble together a season.

The West Linn boys and Hood River girls are looking like the teams to beat leading up to the Oregon state championships March 5-7 at Mt. Hood Meadows. Both teams have won every league race they have entered, often handily. Trevor Maxwell of West Linn has won four races in a row and counting, two slaloms and two giant slaloms.

Parkrose’s one-girl team, Emily Sarich, also has won four in a row.

Maxwell and Sarich led the way in last weekend’s GS on Shooting Star Ridge, followed by Isaac Gregisz of Central Catholic and Kyle Larson of West Linn (second and third for the boys varsity); and Kate Christoferson of La Salle and Annalyssa Sassara of West Linn (second nd third for the girls varsity). A make-up race for Three Rivers League is scheduled for Saturday evening at Meadows. It will be  slalom on Easy Rider, starting at 4:15 pm, with second runs to be held under the lights.

Also on the schedule for this weekend on Mount Hood:

• A Mount Hood League GS on Stadium.
• A Metro Ski League GS/Slalom on Shooting Star, the Evan Wood Memorial.
