High school alpine racers for Metro, Three Rivers and Mt. Hood League teams have seven races scheduled for 2013-14 on Mount Hood.
Competitions at Timberline, Mt. Hood Skibowl and Mt. Hood Meadows will run each weekend from January 4 through February 22, with one bye week for each league. Racers compete individually and as part of a team, with combined times for boys and girls, slalom and giant slalom. There are no Super G or downhill races at the high school level.
The first race of the season will be the Christine Cato Memorial Race at Timberline on Saturday, January 4, 2013, a non-league slalom competition held in memory of a former Mitey Mite and Beaverton High racer who died in an accident just before her senior year in 1989.
State championships will be held at Willamette Pass March 5-7, 2014. All league races are organized and overseen by the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association.
Last season’s states were held at Skibowl in March 2013. Jesuit was the overall state champion for boys and girls combined, followed by Lakeridge and Lake Oswego.
West Linn’s boys team took first at states for the third year in a row, led by Trevor Maxwell and Dalton Tuor. Maxwell won the slalom and placed second in the giant slalom to win the overall title by five and a half seconds. Tuor won the giant slalom and finished fifth in the slalom to place second overall.
Tuor graduated in the spring, but Trevor Maxwell, his older brother Colin Maxwell, and teammate Jordan Riesterer all return for 2013-14, making West Linn the team to beat again.
Ashland High School took first for girls teams. Korey Cimock of Hood River was the individual winner in the combined, taking second in the slalom and third in the GS.
Hood River Valley dominated the states in freestyle competition, winning the team championships for both boys and girls. Hood River’s Tucker FitzSimons took first in freestyle combined for the boys, while Kayla Van Hoose won for the girls, followed by HRV teammates Hannah Bergemann and Hannah Hurley.
High school freestyle skiing is growing in popularity as it enters its third season of sanctioned competition with events in slopestyle, halfpipe and rail jam.
Youth alpine racing has a much longer history on Mount Hood. OISRA has been organizing high school races on the mountain for 55 years.
